North Lauderdale Man Killed In Front Of Apartment

NORTH LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) – A man was shot and killed in front of his North Lauderdale apartment late Monday night.

Broward sheriff's deputies were called to the apartment building at 1611 Belmont Lane just before 11 p.m. after receiving 9-1-1 calls about a shooting.

Kishon Dacosta, 26, had just returned home from renting a movie at Walmart when he was shot.  "He parked, he walked just a few feet, was about to go into his front door and someone shot him multiple times," said Broward Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Dani Moschella.

Neighbors said they heard multiple gun shots which sounded like fireworks.

"I heard a 'boom', a big band.  I was thinking that somebody was working on construction work or something," said Darrell Reid.  "I didn't know what was going on. Then I heard somebody screaming 'Ahh, oh my God'."

Dascosta died just feet away from his wife, step children and infant son. "His wife and three children were inside," said Moschella.  "They heard everything , they came out and found their husband and father collapsed on the front stoop and that's where he died."

Dacosta's father-in-law, Clive Ricketts, said his son-in-law and lived in the complex with his wife and infant child. The couple also has an older daughter.  His wife and three children were inside the apartment at the time of the shooting, they heard everything.

"I got a call. She was frantic on the phone. She said her husband got shot and she said 'Come right now dad, come right now'. So I said 'Okay, I'm in the car and I'm coming," said Ricketts. "When I got to the gate, they wouldn't let me in. The young man was a great young man, I mean anybody would love to have a kid like that as a son-in-law. I really, really hurt right now."

Neighbors said they were shocked since the complex is usually quiet.

"It's really sad.  Kids play outside every single day," said one woman who did not wish to be identified.  "Since it's a gated community, it's really hard, you think you're safer than other people but obviously you are not because it happened right at your doorstep."

The sheriff's office has not released any information on possible suspects or a motive for the shooting.
