MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Miami’s job rate has gone up at 1.5 percent since last year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. But if you are still on the search for a job it may be time to spruce up that resume.
Subtracting certain information from your resume or throwing it in the trash and starting all over could add up to a new job.
Careerbuilder.com said there are new ways to hook a hiring manager and it all starts at the top of your resume.
Instead of an Objective, which outlines the type of position you’d like, maybe you should consider a summary to explain how the company will benefit from your specific skills.
“Talk about proven skills demonstrated skills the breadth of your expertise in that summary,” said career management expert Elaine Varelas.
Varelas also suggested people edit out information about their old jobs.
“Editing out details of a job that was 20 years ago is absolutely on target, you don’t need the details information but people do want to see the trajectory,” said Varelas. “Where have you come from? Where have you grown up?”
It’s also a given that a job-hunter will provide references, so the “References available upon request” spot just takes up valuable real estate on a resume.
And there is no need to get too personal – unless you’re an extreme skydiver.
“I wouldn’t include any demographics or hobbies unless they are something dramatically exciting,” said Varelas. “No one is interested that you like cooking and reading and gardening.”
Details that matter to the position, for example being bi-lingual, should be included.
Overall, experts advise those to be truthful and thoughtful when writing their resumes, after all it is a reflection of you.
