Elderly, Deaf Woman Killed Trying To Cross Hillsboro Blvd

DEERFIELD BEACH (CBSMiami) – An elderly deaf woman died after she stepped into the path of an SUV as she attempted to Hillsboro Boulevard in Deerfield Beach.

Around 6: 45 p.m., Velma Kimmel, 71, was walking from the median when she went to cross the westbound lanes. As she started to walk across the lanes she was hit by a Cadillac SRX driven by Malvinas Miller-Jones who was trying to make a left turn onto Hillsboro Boulevard, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.

Kimmel was rushed to Broward Health North, where she was pronounced dead.

The sheriff's office said there was no crosswalk in the area of the crash.

No word on if Miller-Jones will be charged.
