Florida Gets A "C-" For How Much It Spends On Students

TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami/AP) – When it comes to what Florida spends on its students the state doesn't make the grade, according to data compiled by the U.S. Census.

The Census has released its annual report on per-pupil spending for public elementary and secondary schools in fiscal year 2011. Florida spent $8,887 per student, which is significantly below the national average of $10,560.

That figure placed Florida 42nd out of 50 states and the District of Columbia.

The Census data was drawn from the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2011. It does not take into account what has happened the last two years.

Florida cut education spending by more than $1 billion during Gov. Rick Scott's first year in office. Legislators restored the funding in 2012. They added more than $1 billion in the budget Scott signed on Monday.
