Pinecrest Kids Have Fun During "Fit Kids Day"

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – It was a day of fun for Pinecrest kids and their families as they spent the afternoon outdoors at the second annual Fit Kids Day.

The event, held at Evelyn Greer Park, was designed to get children of all ages motivated to be active and eat healthy. It started last year when a group of Pinecrest students wanted to find ways to get their friends moving.

"We were all talking about how not a lot of kids exercise at home. Nobody likes to eat healthy. So we thought that there should be an organization or a day for kids to go out and get some exercise while having fun," said Sofia De La Pena who helped come up with the idea for Fit Kids Day.

So what was her favorite activity to take part in?

"I like the Miami Elite volleyball because I play volleyball, so that's kind of my favorite," said De La Pena.

Activities throughout the day included tennis, martial arts and learning relaxation techniques. There were also bounce houses and a rock climbing wall.

"It's a day for children and their families to experiment with different forms of activity that they might not have had the opportunity to try out before, to learn a new skill, get active, get physically fit and enjoy the parks," said Pinecrest Mayor Cindy Lerner.

Lerner said this year's Fit Kids Day fell on the same weekend as National Kids To Parks Day so it seemed truly fitting.
