Meet The Newest Member Of The Miami Police Mounted Unit

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The Miami Police Department's Mounted Unit added a new member to its ranks Wednesday.

A new police horse was donated to the department by Felipe Valls and his daughters.

City of Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado and Police Chief Manuel Orosa were on hand to accept the donation at a news conference Wednesday morning.

Mr. Valls is the owner of the famous Versailles Restaurant.

In honor of Mr. Valls, the horse was named Felipon.

The Mounted Unit is part of the police department's Patrol Support Unit which also includes Marine Patrol and Canine detail.

The Mounted Patrol Detail is responsible for providing specialized Mounted Police support to specific situations, including crowd control. The Mounted Patrol Unit is also used to promote a positive relationship with the community at special events within the City of Miami.
