Monday Deadline To Register To Vote On Stadium Referendum

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Miami-Dade residents who want to cast their ballots on a special referendum on using tax dollars to fund renovations for Sun Life Stadium but who are not registered to vote have until Monday to do so.

The vote is set for May 14th.

"One of our most important missions is to encourage all eligible residents to register and to take advantage of their right to vote," said Penelope Townsley, Miami-Dade County Supervisor of Elections."

On the ballot, Miami-Dade will be asked to decide if they approve of a deal between county Mayor Carlos Gimenez and the Miami Dolphins which would keep the team here for the next 30 years and increase a tax paid by tourist who rent hotel rooms on the mainland to pay for part of the stadium modernization.

In order to register to vote you must: be 18 years or older; a U.S. citizen; a permanent resident of Miami-Dade County (note: there is no specific time requirement to live in Miami-Dade County to be considered a permanent resident.)

Registering to vote can be done in person at the Elections Department or through the Elections website. All online forms must be printed, signed, and mailed to the Elections Department with a postmark of April 15 to be valid in the special election.
