Miami Beach Hosts Gun Buy-Back Program

MIAMI BEACH (CBS4) – The Miami Beach Police Department hosted their first gun buy back program on Saturday at the Miami Beach Convention Center.

Anyone who turned in a gun received a gift card worth up to $300. Police said they hope programs like these will make their streets safer.

"The goal is two-fold," said Miami Beach Police Chief Raymond Martinez. "One is to get some guns off the street that are maybe lying around people's homes and they're not sure. They are not familiar on how to secure them or how to death them. It's also a public awareness campaign for the community."

Police paid $35 for a revolver $35 and up to $300 for an assault rifle.

At the end of the day, Martinez said he was pleased with the turnout.
