Coral Gables Police Trying To Stop Rash Of Purse Snatchings
CORAL GABLES (cbs4) - Two days, two purse snatchings in the light of day in Coral Gables.
Police say they have surveillance video of one of the crimes and a sketch of one of the thieves in the other.
Eduardo Quesada says the surveillance cameras outside his restaurant rolled Sunday afternoon as two women -- one of whom is 81 years old -- walked in a parking lot near Giralda Avenue. Seconds later, the video shows a white car drive into frame, reverse and, with a door open, a man gets out of the car.
In a flash, the man returns, running with a bag in his hand. Police say the purse belongs to the elderly woman. The video shows the car speeding off as one of the women comes running for help.
"They just disappear like that," Quesada said. "We're gonna need more police presence around here."
Just a few blocks from Giralda Avenue, police say on Saturday thieves targeted another victim -- this time a woman leaving the Courtyard Marriott Hotel on Navarre Avenue. Police say thieves stole her purse and when she ran after the bad guys, investigators say they dragged her with their car through the parking lot.
Police say the woman suffered cuts on her face and body.
Police are concerned about the crimes and so are people who visit Coral Gables.
"It happens anywhere and everywhere," said tourist Joshua Arroyo. "That's why we have to be aware of our surroundings."
"It is scary," said Rosie Lopez. "You've got think twice before you head out."
