Chad Johnson Catches Break

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) – Former Miami Dolphins wide receiver Chad Johnson was placed on administrative probation Monday morning and will not have to show up in court for hearings moving forward.

"I've learned my lesson," a contrite Johnson said Monday.

If he has completed his counseling and parties want to agree to convert to administrative probation," said Broward Circuit Judge Kathleen McHugh.

Johnson had been on probation since September after he cut a deal with prosecutors over charges he head-butted his then-wife, Evelyn Lozada, during an argument last August. The six-time Pro Bowl wide receiver was arrested last August in front of his Davie home.

Lozada reportedly found a receipt for a box of condoms and confronted Johnson about it.

Under terms of the original plea deal, Johnson pled no contest and was ordered to serve one year of probation, complete batters' intervention counseling and pay medical restitution.

After Johnson's arrest, he was cut by the Dolphins in a scene that was caught on camera by the HBO show "Hard Knocks." Lozada was once engaged to Miami Heat star Antoine Walker and is best known from the reality show Basketball Wives.

According to Johnson's lawyer, if Chad has no further problems, his legal problems are likely over.

"It's unfortunate, I made a terrible mistake," Johnson said. "I've apologized as many times as I could. My focus is to get back in the league. Hopefully, I can get back in and play the game I love so much. Something I've worked hard since I was a baby."

Johnson and Lozada had only been married a short time when the incident happened and were divorced quickly thereafter.
