VATICAN CITY, Vatican (CBSMiami) – A new era at the Vatican will officially start a little after 4 a.m. eastern time when Francis will be installed as the new Pope of the Roman Catholic Church.
Pope Francis I will officially receive the ring of the pope and the pallium, wooden stole, during the installation mass. A total of six sovereign rulers, 31 heads of state, three princes, and 11 heads of government will make their way to the Vatican for the ceremony.
The Vatican said the installation Mass would be a simplified version of the 2005 installation ceremony for Pope Benedict XVI.
The Vatican also said Pope Francis I’s coat of arms and official ring will be simple and harking back to popes of the past. The coat of arms is the same one Francis used as archbishop of Buenos Aires. The ring was once offered by Pope Paul VI, who presided over the second half of the Second Vatican Council.
Additionally, Pope Francis I officially asked all Vatican officials to remain in their current positions, however, they were informed the move may only be a temporary one. Pope Francis I is also searching for a Secretariat of State.
It would not be unheard of for Pope Francis to choose a trusted advisor or secretary who was not already part of the office of Secretariat of State; perhaps a nuncio (the Vatican’s version of an ambassador) currently serving in another country, who could at least give the impression of real change.
However, given that the pope himself has never worked in an official capacity at the Vatican, many believe he will opt for someone more comfortable in the corridors of the Curia — someone familiar with what took place under the previous papacy — in order to bring an experienced hand to help him clean up the mess revealed by Vatileaks.
