SOUTH FLORIDA (CBSMiami) – Tri-Rail commuters and leisure riders will be able to catch a Tri-Rail train every hour on the weekend and holidays beginning Saturday, March 2.

Tri-Rail will begin running 30 trains a day, as compared to the 16 trains a day the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (SFRTA) currently operates on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. The service will increase from two-hour to hourly headways.

“I think this will be a boon for our weekend ridership. People have been asking for more frequency on the weekends for years,” said SFRTA Chair, Mayor Steven L. Abrams.

“The enhanced schedule will give shift workers more flexibility to take the train on the weekend, travelers more options to access our three international airports, and casual riders greater opportunity to experience all of the dynamic and diverse destinations this region has to offer,” Abrams added.

The new schedule means that trains will operate on the weekends as frequently as they currently do during off-peak weekday hours. Southbound trains will begin operating out of the Mangonia Park Station at 5:50 a.m. and northbound trains will begin operating out of the Hialeah Market Station at 5:20 a.m.

The new schedule provides for later night service, with the last southbound trains departing Mangonia Park at 9:00 p.m. and the last northbound train departing Hialeah Market at 9:45 p.m.
