Bicyclist Killed In SW Ranches Hit And Run

SOUTHWEST RANCHES – Police chased down the driver of a red Toyota traveling east on Griffin Road in Southwest Ranches after he struck and killed a bicyclist then sped off.

The driver eventually crossed the median and continued east.

"Essentially he was going against traffic and ended up side-swiping three vehicles and finally ended up in a head-on collision with a fourth vehicle and his vehicle came to a stop finally," said BSO's Kaeyla Concepcion.

Police said none of the drivers or passengers in the other cars were seriously injured, nor was the driver of the red Toyota. However, police said the bicyclist who was hit was pronounced dead on the scene.

Ramon Rivera said he was there in the moments leading up to the fatal crash.

"The red car went by first and then two policemen and two more were chasing the car," Rivera said.

"When I heard the crash, I came running and I saw the two police cars and I walked up there and I saw the body."

"They were actively trying to stop a car...the semantics of whether or not its a pursuit...I wasn't here," said Davie Police Captain Dave Engle.

"The officers say they were shutting [the vehicle] down as they came over 75...that this guy was way ahead and that they knew they wouldn't be able to catch him."
