Driver Injured After Hialeah Police-Involved Shooting

HIALEAH (CBS4) - Police direct traffic for several hours at the busy intersection of West 4th Avenue and 21st street in Hialeah after a police officer pulled out his gun and shot a driver during a traffic stop.

"I'm not hearing it was an exchange of gunfire or anything," said Carl Zogby, spokesman for the Hialeah Police Department. "I'm hearing it was one shot fired by the officer at the drive of the vehicle."

The driver of a red Audi was shot once in the torso.  Police internal affairs and investigators for the State Attorney's Office were on scene looking into the shooting.

Right now, police are not saying what lead up to it or why the driver was pulled over.   Zogby said he does not believe a weapon was found in the car.

"That's part of the investigation," he said.  "They had a lot of things going on in the city at that moment.  There could be a number of reasons why the officer pulled this car over."

The driver was in stable condition when he was taken to the hospital.

Police have not released the name of the officer or the man who was shot.
