HOMESTEAD (CBS4) -A toddler had to be rushed to the hospital late Friday after being struck by a car in Homestead, police said.

A black BMW traveling eastbound on Campbell Drive at SW 162 Avenue hit the girl as she was crossing the street, Captain Bobby Rea said.

The girl is between 2 and 3 years old, Rea told CBS 4 News on scene.

The child was airlifted to Miami Children's Hospital. Her condition was not known.

Witnesses said the driver did not appear to be speeding at the time of the crash.

Investigators were trying to determine how the girl was separated from the group that was crossing the street, Capt. Rea said.

The driver remained on scene. It's not known if that person will be cited.

The car was towed and the road reopened just before 11p.m.
