Man Finds Elderly Mother Dead In Miami Home

MIAMI (CBS4) - A Miami man checking on the well-being of his mother made a horrific discovery when he found her body wrapped up in a blanket Friday afternoon.

The man, who has not been identified, had not heard from his mother Carmen Diaz, 78, for several days so he went to her home on the 100 block of Northwest 34th Street around 4 p.m.

When he entered the home, he found his mother partially wrapped in a blanket in the bathroom. It is unclear how long she had been dead.

"We don't know if indeed there is some sort of struggle that may have occurred, but it does appear to us somewhat suspicious in nature," said Miami Police spokesperson Kenia Reyes.

Police say Diaz had lived in the home for five decades.

"Carmen's been living here for about over 50 years," said neighbor Carmen Garcia. "I knew her story. She was a nurse at Jackson [Memorial Hospital] a very long time ago. She was very friendly, she would come over for hot coffee and talk about her past...about her career."

Officers say Diaz's death remains unclassified until an autopsy is performed by the Miami-Dade Medical Examiner's Office.

Anyone with information is urged to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at (305) 471-TIPS.
