Man Faces Up To 30 Years After Beheading Case's Split Verdict
BROWARD (CBSMiami) – A 44-year-old man was convicted of trying to cover up the death of a woman whose head was discovered floating in an Everglades canal nearly seven years ago. Robert Mackey avoided the jury's full wrath, however: he was acquitted of second-degree murder.
Mackey, 44, faces up to 30 years in prison when he's sentenced Feb. 28 after he was convicted of accessory after the fact, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported.
As they filed out of the courthouse Tuesday, jurors refused to answer questions: they wouldn't say whether they believe Mackey beheaded Lorraine Hatzakorzian or whether they believe he killed the woman somewhere outside of Florida.
Jurors also did not reveal details of their split verdict, which came two-and-a-half hours after they told Broward Circuit Judge Ilona Holmes that they were unable to reach a unanimous verdict.
