Elderly Driver Rescued From Car After Plunging Into Hialeah Canal

HIALEAH (CBS4) - An elderly man is in critical condition after his car plunged into a canal in Hialeah.

Hialeah police Sgt. Eddie Rodriguez said the car plunged into the canal near the 6500 block of W. 4th Avenue just before 7 p.m. Saturday.

Police say another man nearby jumped in the water and tried to help but was unable to get the man out of the car. A rescue diver did get the man out and he was taken to the hospital in extremely critical condition.

Police spoke extensively with the man who tried to help, hoping he can provide some clues as to how the car ended up in the canal.

"He's our key witness he was closest to the vehicle when the accident occurred and he's helping us with this investigation," said Sgt. Rodriguez.

One woman on the scene said the car was going slowly when it slipped into the water. There were no tire tracks on the road or the banks of the canal.

Police have not released the name of the elderly driver.
