Teacher Arrested For Having Sex With Student

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) – A New Jersey teacher wanted for having sex with a student was captured at a rehab facility in Davie.

The U.S. Marshal's Service tells us they arrested Jennelin Garcia-Calle, 28, on Thursday night. She is charged with sexual assault.

Prosecutors in New Jersey say Garcia-Calle had sex with a 16 year old male student several times on the campus of Plainfield High School, where she taught algebra.

"It was in her classroom after school," said prosecutor Ted Romankow. "The door was locked, the window was blocked and they had the relations there."

Investigators say Garcia-Calle fled to South Florida earlier this week after an arrest warrant had been issued and detectives tracked her down through cellphone and text messages.

"She had told either friends or associates that she was going to South Florida to get help," said U.S. Marshal's spokesperson Barry Golden. "Obviously Ms. Garcia-Calle was aware that these charges were forthcoming. She was aware that she was probably going to be in a lot of trouble and that's when she fled the New Jersey area."

Prosecutors in New Jersey say the encounters began in December and lasted until mid-January. Romankow said the affair came to light when the student told his parents.

"He was under intense pressure by the teacher over the course of the weekend to eliminate some of the evidence which he did not do," Romankow said.

Students at the school say they never expected Garcia-Calle to be involved with a student.

"I honestly think it's very, very, very shocking," said Jadeanny Harris. "I would never have thought she would have done something like that."

Garcia-Calle is being held without bond. She will have an extradition hearing on Monday. Prosecutors in New Jersey expect her to return to their jurisdiction early next week.
