Miami Police Looking To Get More Guns Off The Streets

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Encouraged by the success of their first gun buyback event in 2013, Miami police have two more scheduled in the next two weeks.

Last Saturday, the Miami Police Department and the Rickia Issac Foundation collected 130 guns at the Model City NET in Liberty City. Those who dropped off a weapon received Miami Heat tickets, or their choice of gift certificates to Winn Dixie Supermarkets or Walmart.

People who turned in assault type weapons received premium 100 level Miami Heat tickets.

"The success of this operation was possible through the collaboration of the City, private enterprise, and residents. It highlights how important the removal of guns from the streets is to City residents," said Mayor Tomas Regalado.

This Saturday another buyback event will be held at St. John Baptist Church in Overtown from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

On Saturday, Feb. 3rd, a buyback event will be held at San Juan Bosco Church in Little Havana from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
