Report: Kosar Trying New Treatment For Concussion Relief

TAMPA (CBSMiami) – Bernie Kosar withstood his fair share of hard hits during his career with the Miami Hurricanes and Cleveland Browns. Kosar, like all football players, suffered concussions during his career, but he's trying to avoid the downfall players like Junior Seau have had through a new treatment.

According to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, Kosar is being treated by Dr. Rick Sponaugle with intravenous and oral medications that are "intended to increase blood flow to the brain." The treatments, according to the Sun-Sentinel, have "drastically reduced the headaches, mental buzzing, and insomnia Kosar said he has endured for more than a decade."

Dr. Sponaugle treats Kosar at his office outside of Tampa. Kosar reportedly suffered a dozen known concussions, and many other times when he was left temporarily disoriented from a vicious hit, according the Sun-Sentinel.

Kosar told the Sun-Sentinel he tried other remedies including acupuncture, massage, pain medication, sleeping pills and holistic approaches, but none worked.

Sponaugle said Thursday that he has treated 18 NFL players including a lineman who couldn't remember the play three seconds after he left the huddle, the Sun-Sentinel reported.
