MIAMI SPRINGS (CBS4) – A mother and her son are lucky to be alive after a freak accident caused their car to propel into a Miami Springs canal Monday night.

Police and Fire Rescue officials rushed to the scene on the 900 block of Royal Poinciana Drive just after 7 p.m.

The woman and her son told police that they were pulling into a parking spot to see a movie when her shoe got stuck under the pedal, causing her to accelerate.

The car drove right into the canal and the son said he broke the back window to free himself and his mom. They were able to get back on land and wait for help.

Police are investigating.
