Teen Killed In ATV Vs. SUV Crash

FT. LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) – A Ft. Lauderdale family is mourning their loss after a deadly crash involving an ATV on Christmas day.

The accident happened at NW 5th Street and NW 8th Avenue around 1:30 p.m.

Brandon Joyner, 20, was riding an ATV when he slammed into a Chevy Tahoe driven by 57-year old Johnny Anthony, according to Ft. Lauderdale police Detective DeAnna Garcia.

Anthony was heading west on NW 5th Street. As he entered the NW 8th Avenue intersection, Joyner crashed into the front passenger side door.

Ruthie Mae Nicholson, who was at home with her grandson, heard the crash.

"All of a sudden we heard a 'Bam', like that," said Nicholson.

"He flew when the car hit him, he flew through the air," said Kevin Nicholson.

Joyner, who was thrown from the ATV on impact, was rushed to Broward Health Medical Center where he died.

"I thought he would grow up to, you know, have kids," said Joyner's mother Janice Allen. "I have nothing that belonged to Brandon but his clothes and his shoes."

Allen said she hated that Brandon rode around on the ATV.

"I said 'Brandon, you know I don't like what you're doing, get off that bike'," recalled Allen.

Allen said just before the accident on Saturday they had talked about Christmas dinner.

"He said 'Momma, I got your Christmas present.'  I said 'It's not about Christmas son, just come home and have Christmas dinner with your family.'  He said 'Okay momma, I'll be back'.  He never made it.  My heart hurts so bad."

Every year while others celebrate Christmas, Allen said her heart will break reliving the tragedy that took Brandon.

"I don't' want to celebrate Christmas no more," said Allen.  "My child is gone and there's nothing I can do for him."

Investigators are still trying to determine who was at fault in the accident and would like to speak with anyone who may have witnessed it.
