Miami's "Orchid Show" Is Not About Flowers

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The Orchid Show has come to town and we're not talking about flowers. This so-called "Pleasure Garden" is a pop-up theatre of sorts which blends song, dance, burlesque, aerial acrobatics and more and it's taking South Florida by storm.

"We wanted to create something that was quite new and I think because burlesque and cabaret are old fashioned concepts we wanted to update them for pop references," said director William Baker.

This one of a kind theater experience is directed by William Baker who has worked with such pop stars as Rihanna, Britney Spears and Kylie Minogue.

"I don't know, it's really difficult to describe what it is. I describe it as a cocktail of burlesque, circus and pop. It's very erotic and sensual," said Baker.

The actual theatre, known as the Pleasure Garden, is a story in itself.  It's an old Belgian Spiegeltent, or traveling tent. Originally built in Belgium during the late 19th and early 20th Centuries, only a handful of these Spiegeltents remain in existence today.

The antiqued "mirror-tent" is adorned with stained glass, red velvet and chandeliers. Just think of it as part Moulin Rouge and part Cabaret, with plenty of sensory overload.

"The whole concept of the Pleasure Gardens was full of experiences like this in the 20's. Come have dinner have a drink and see a cabaret," said Baker.

Baker also plans to take this erotic show on the road.

"The idea was, because it's kind of a pop-up environment and pop-up concept really, it would tour anywhere, tour any city and we're going to take it New York eventually.

Tickets for Orchid range from $49 to $119 per person. Recommended age is 16 and older. Orchid tickets are now on sale at www.orchidtheshow.com.

Regular performance schedule: Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8 p.m.; Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. and Sundays at 6 p.m. No performances on Mondays or Tuesdays.

The Orchid Show location is  38th St. and Biscayne Boulevard, on the outskirts of the Miami Design District in Miami.
