Gas Leak Shuts Down Stretch Of Hollywood Boulevard

HOLLYWOOD (CBSMiami) – Drivers should avoid a stretch of Hollywood Boulevard because it's shutdown. The road is closed in both directions from the Intracoastal Waterway to Eighth Avenue due to a natural gas leak.

Crews from TECO People's Gas have isolated the source of the leak as a gas line rupture and are working to make repairs.

Officials say it was an alert resident in the area that reported the smell. Crews told that resident, and others in the area, to stay indoors while they got to work.

"The product is lighter than air, so it's actually dissipating and we got a nice little breeze down at the beach so that actually helps," said Hollywood Fire Division Chief Joel Medina.

City of Hollywood Department of Fire Rescue and Beach Safety crews are also on the scene as a safeguard.

No evacuations are being recommended at this time.

Motorists and pedestrians are advised to avoid this area. Those traveling to and from the barrier island will be detoured to either Hallandale Beach Boulevard to the south or Sheridan Street to the north.
