Broward Commission Picks New Mayor, Vice Mayor

FT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) - Broward County Commissioners have elected a new Mayor and Vice Mayor, a job the voters don't get to choose.

Commissioner Kristin Jacobs, who was vice-mayor from 2011 to 2012, was elected Mayor by the commission. She'll serve a one-year term.

This is the second time around for Jacobs who has served on the commission since 1998. In 2005, she was tapped for the Mayor's seat after serving as Vice Mayor in 2004.

Commissioner Barbara Sharief was elected Vice-Mayor. Prior to her election to the County Commission, Barbara proudly served as Vice-Mayor and City Commissioner of Miramar.

Both jobs are largely ceremonial positions, as the county employs a County Manager who is in day to day charge of county departments.
