Several People Injured As Car Veers Into Miami Gardens Bus Bench

MIAMI GARDENS (CBS4) - Several people were taken to the hospital Tuesday afternoon after a driver lost control and careened her car into a bus bench full of people.

From Chopper 4, fire rescue crews were seen tending to at least four people at the intersection of  199 Street and Northwest 2nd Avenue. Several of those victims were taken to the hospital by air rescue helicopters.

"He didn't even break, he didn't skid, he went right through them," said Witness Sue Onayak.

She and other witnesses say the driver of a white car was speeding east on NW 199th Street around 4pm when the driver in front of him stopped.

"He over compensated and hit the Nissan and rolled right over the bus bench," said witness Austin Hines.

"In order to avoid hitting the other car he went up on the sidewalk where there were six people sitting waiting for the bus," said Miami Gardens Police Captain Ralph Suarez.

In the midst of all the chaos, bystanders rushed over to help after hearing someone was trapped underneath the car.

"Me and my brother and eight others ran over and pushed the car off and pulled him out of there," said Witness Conrad Hines.

Another witness, David James, said the young man looked okay after being pulled from beneath the car. "He wasn't talking, but he was shaking his head."

Police say four of the people hit had to be airlifted to the hospital and were in critical condition.

A woman who identified herself as the sister of the driver responsible, told CBS4 News "I just want the people to know to the family members my heart goes out to them."

The victims' names have not been released, and the name of the driver responsible has not been released either.

Currently, he is not facing any criminal charges.
