MIAMI (CBSMiami) – After the release of the first Bowl Championship Series rankings, one thing remains abundantly clear: the Southeastern Conference is still the cream of the crop when it comes to college football.

The SEC has won the last six national championships in a row and kicked off the initial ratings from the BCS by taking four of the top 10 spots in the rankings and six of the top 12.

The consensus number one team in the country was Alabama and then the BCS computers placed the Florida Gators second, the Oregon Ducks third, the Kansas State Wildcats fourth, and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish fifth.

Further down the rankings, LSU was sixth, followed by South Carolina, Oregon State, Oklahoma, USC, Georgia, Mississippi State, West Virginia, Florida State, and Rutgers to round out the Top 15.

The rankings will continue to get shuffled in the coming weeks as Alabama has to play at Tennessee, at home against Mississippi State, and at LSU in the coming weeks. If the Crimson Tide run through that part of the schedule without being challenged, as they have thus far, then they will remain number one.

Florida still has to play South Carolina and Georgia in back to back games the next two weeks, plus travel to Tallahassee to face a tough Florida State team to close out the season. Oregon finishes its season with three of its last four games against top 20 teams.

Kansas State faces four top 25 teams in its final six games to end the season, including dates against Texas Tech, TCU, and a season-ending game against Texas. But, KSU won’t have to play a championship game if they win the Big XII.

Notre Dame still has to play at Oklahoma and at USC to close out the season, along with a game against BYU this week. Of the teams ranked in the Top 5, Notre Dame may have the easiest route to the National Championship game in Miami.

But the bottom line is that if Alabama or Florida run the tables in the SEC and win the championship game, they can punch their ticket to the national championship game.
