Pricey Medical Equipment Stolen From Miami Podiatrist

MIAMI (CBS4) - A South Florida podiatrist says he lost a quarter million dollars worth of medical equipment after his office was burglarized.

The break-in happened Sunday afternoon about 3 p.m. at the Coral Gables Podiatry Center. It was all caught on camera.

Surveillance video shows a man peeking in the doctor's office window. Once he enters, he puts on a ball cap along with his khakis and polo shirt so you can't see his face. Later in the video it looks like he's also wearing pink gloves. The video shows him taking a number of machines out of the office including lasers and an ultrasound machine.

"He knew the place very well and he knew we weren't there on Sundays and he took advantage of it," Office manager J.P. Hernandez said.

Hernandez speculates whoever stole the machines will either go into the podiatry business for himself or sell the machines.

Now, Doctor Gary Small says his office has lost some of its most valuable cutting edge technology. Staff had to bring in one machine from Tampa so the doctor could continue seeing patients

"My business stopped. I'm trying to borrow machines and trying get my business going again," said Dr. Small.

Small told CBS4's Maggie Newland that  he's angry that someone would do this, not just to a doctor, but a police officer. Small is a reserve officer for Miami-Dade Police.

"I go out there and I support and protect the public," he said, "It's unbelievable that someone can take someone's livelihood and not care at all about ..just steal from someone like that is pathetic."

Coral Gables Podiatry Center is right outside the Coral Gables city limits, so the office manager said the City of Miami Police Department is investigating.

Anyone with information is urged to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at (305) 471-TIPS.
