Gator Rips Off Elderly Woman's Arm

ORLANDO (CBSMiami) – An alligator ripped off an elderly woman's arm after it attacked her near a Leesburg mobile home park.

The attacked happened just after 7 a.m. A neighbor spotted the woman in the canal and jumped in to save her but could not lift her out of the water, according to the Orlando Sentinel. He did, however, keep her head above water until help arrived.

The woman was airlifted to Orlando Regional Medical Center. The Lake County Sheriff's Office has not released the woman's name, her condition or exact age.

Sheriff's deputies and paramedics did spot an alligator in the area but could not confirm if this was the gator that attacked the woman.

This is not the first attack of the year.

In July, 17-year old Kaleb Langdale was attacked by a 10-foot gator while swimming in the Caloosahatchee River. He yelled to his friends to get out of the water as he wrestled with it. With the gator's jaws clamped down on his arm just below the elbow, Langdale saved himself by tearing the rest of his arm away and making it to shore.

The alligator was later caught and killed by wildlife officials.

The Orlando Sentinel contributed to this report.
