Suspects Involved In Police Shooting Charged

MIAMI (CBS4) – Three Miami men suspected of a robbing an off duty Miami Dade police officer and then shooting him are in custody.

Dedrick Brown, 20; Travares Santiago, 20 and 20-year old Willie Barney have all been charged with Attempted Murder with a Firearm and Armed Robbery with a Firearm.

Investigators said the officer, who was not in uniform, had just left the back of the church, at 6701 NW 7th Avenue, to go to his car when he was ambushed by the trio.

"They demanded property from him," said Rosanna Cordero-Stutz of the Miami Dade Police Department. "They took property from him and then they shot him."

Barney was allegedly the man who pulled the trigger.

The officer, whose name has not been released, was hit in the chest.  He managed to call 911 on his own. His mother also said he called his father and told him that he would be okay and not to worry.

He was rushed to the Ryder Trauma Center where he is said to be stable.

"Your emotions have to be checked that much more," said Cordero-Stutz. "At the end of the day, this is our job and this is what we do when we investigate these type of horrific crimes."

His mother arrived on the scene shortly after hysterical from emotion.

The officer is a 10 year law enforcement veteran with six of those years spent on the Miami Dade Police force.

After the shooting, police launched a massive manhunt for the three men who drove away in a red 2007 or 2008 model Pontiac G6.  The trio was captured a short time later.

The injured officer has since been discharged from the hospital and is recovering at home.
