Hurricane Gordon Drops To Cat 1 Status

MIAMI (CBSMiami) — Hurricane Gordon continues to weaken as it moves toward the Azores.

At 5 p.m. Sunday the Category One hurricane was about 160 miles southwest of the Sao Miguel in the Azores.

Maximum sustained winds have dropped from 90 to 85 miles per hour, with higher gusts.

The storm is moving toward the east-northeast at 21 miles per hour. Gordon is expected to continue in this direction with a gradual decrease in forward speed over the next several days.  On the forecast track the center of Gordon will be near or over the islands of the eastern Azores on Monday.

National Hurricane Center forecasters said that Gordon will weaken over the next 48 hours, but it will be at or near hurricane strength when pass over or near the eastern Azores.

Hurricane Warning is in effect for the eastern Azores.

Gordon is expected to produce up to six inches of rain over the central and eastern Azores.
