Miami Fugitive Wanted for Medicare Fraud

MIAMI (CBSMiami) — A Miami man accused of bilking Medicare out of millions has been added to the list of most wanted fugitives.

Francisco Chavez  was allegedly responsible for a scam worth $11 million in Medicare fraud while running a company that supposedly sold medical equipment.

Federal health officials said before Chavez was indicted in 2011 he was paid about $1.7 million after submitting claims to Medicare for equipment that patients had never received, including pressure support ventilators and motorized wheelchairs.

Chavez is detained in Spain on drug charges.  Federal authorities are trying to get him extradited back to the U.S.

The list of most wanted fugitives is compiled by the Department of Health and Human Services inspector general.
