UM’s Golden Pumped For Fall Practice
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – University of Miami Hurricanes head coach Al Golden met the media Thursday as the team opens fall camp. Coach Golden was full of hope as the team completed its first full offseason of work.
“You know, so much of our jobs as coaches in Division I football has become administrative, alumni related, community related development,” Coach Golden said. “So I think just to be able to get around the players, seeing them come back, seeing their faces and their eyes, that eagerness, I think it’s the same thing with the coaches.”
UM lost a lot of talent to early departures to the NFL at the end of last year, but that isn’t tempering any of Golden’s hope for the coming season.
“The infusion of youngsters into the program has really created an energy and competition that we needed.”
When asked specifically what positions he’s looking at closely heading into fall camp, Golden had trouble nailing down at least one.
“The quarterback position, I’m excited about that position,” Golden said. “I think wide receivers because we brought in five should be exciting. On the o-line I’m anxious to see who steps up there. There’s not a lot of guys that are untouchable right now.”
Some Hurricanes fans are very nervous about the coming season because of the influx of youth into the roster. It’s a view that’s not shared by Golden.
“We’re going to have some young guys on the field this year,” Golden said. “We’ve got a no-excuse mentality amongst the coaches and its gaining traction amongst the players.”
And the Hurricanes may not be finished tinkering with the roster just yet. Coaches across the country have started to look at and try to poach some Penn State players after the school was handed severe sanctions by the NCAA.
Penn State players can transfer from the school right now and not have to sit out a year, which is the NCAA policy for typical transfers.
“At some point I will (look into the players), but I really haven’t,” Golden said. “You guys know I’ve had a full-plate down here. But at some point certainly.”
