Store Clerk Who Fought Back Against Crook Back On Job

NORTH MIAMI (CBS4) – A North Miami gas station clerk who fought back against an armed robber is back on the job.

Diego Correa, who works the overnight shift at the Chevron in the 13,000 block of Biscayne Boulevard, said he remembers the man who robbed him initially tried to get into the store last Thursday but couldn't. Sunday night he came back armed and ready for action.

Ashley Fels goes to that gas station every morning for coffee. She had no idea an armed robber targeted the store, not once, but twice.

"That's scary, I think that's really scary. It's not like they told anybody who lives in the area that that had happened," she told CBS4's Natalia Zea.

"I hope they catch him I really do. This is a family neighborhood."

Surveillance video inside the store will raise the chances the robber is caught. The armed man wore a heavy hooded jacket, sunglasses and gloves.

When he demanded money from the cash register, Correa refused to hand it over. Instead, he used the gas station's bathroom key chain to repeatedly hit the robber over and over.

Diego said he hit the guy hard on the back and on his arms but it had little effect because of the thick jacket.

Despite Correa's efforts, the armed man managed to steal the cash register box which had about $700 in cash.
