Survivor Of Fatal Crash Near Marlins Park Continues To Recover

MIAMI (CBS4) - The 10-year-old survivor of Saturday night's fatal crash near Marlins Park, Magdeline Diaz, is still recovering at Jackson Memorial Hospital. Family members are requesting privacy, but through a spokesperson said the little girl made it out of surgery and is in stable condition.

Magdeline's aunt Adriana Diaz, her brother Franklin Diaz and her grandmother Esther Diaz were all killed when the driver of a red minivan crashed into them as they were walking from Marlins Park. The driver, Raul Ortega who died in the crash, is believed to have had a medical emergency when he lost control of his van.

"It's very hard," said Diaz Family Friend Edwin Abreu as he held the family's last picture in his hand. "When you can do nothing you know to recover their live, it's very hard."

Abreu is a childhood friend of Abrahan Diz, Magdeline's grandfather. He says he and Diaz reconnected on Facebook recently and were planning to get together while Diaz was in town with his family for vacation. But it never happened. Abreu says he heard about the pedestrians struck outside of Marlins Park, but had no idea who they were until their names were released Monday.

The Diaz family asked Abreu and Catarina Jimenez to speak on behalf of their family.

"There are no words to describe the affliction we feel, but we are now focusing on Magdeline," said Jimenez.  "We also express our most sincere sympathy and prayers to the family of Mr. Ortega who has also lost a loved one."

Family friends have opened a charitable account in the family's name at BB&T branches to help with funeral expenses.
