DJ Irie Hopes For A Couple Of Slam Dunks To End The Month

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – In between the high-flying Dwyane Wade dunks and Chris Bosh blocks, Heat fans get worked up by the pulse racing, heart pumping beats of one man – DJ Irie.

Before DJ Irie, whose real name is Ian, was motivating people to move at the AmericanAirlines Arena, he was making a name for himself in the music industry.

"I had people who really believed in my passion, my passion was music," said Irie.

But it was one fateful job offer that changed his life.

"When the heat were moving from the Miami Arena to the AmericanAirlines Arena and their plans were like 'Hey we have a brand new facility, let's add some entertainment that's going to be really (hot) and they came up with the idea of coming up with a DJ," said Irie.

Over a decade later, with one NBA Championship down and a second waiting in the wings, Irie's popularity has spread.

This year he'll host his 8th DJ Irie Weekend – three days, of golf, partying and special celebrity guests. Proceeds from the event, which runs from June 28th-30th, will go to Irie's foundation which helps area kids.

"With the Irie Foundation we don't want to just follow them in middle school but help throughout so we started a scholarship program as well," said Irie.

But this month holds another big excitement besides the DJ Irie Weekend.

Thursday is Irie's birthday, so a win by the Heat to clinch the NBA Championship would make it even more special, not just to him but to all who support the team.

"The fans, the Heat fans, they deserve to have this at home, this city will party like never before, rain or shine," said Irie.
