Broward School Board To Consider Raising School Meal Prices

BROWARD (CBSMiami) – It may cost more to eat lunch at a Broward County public school in the upcoming school year.

The School Board of Broward County will consider raising meal prices at a meeting on Tuesday.

If approved, breakfast would cost $1.20 in elementary schools and $1.30 in middle and high schools. That's a ten cent increase.

If approved, lunch would cost $2.00 in elementary schools, $2.35 in middle schools and $2.50 in high schools.

For adults, breakfast would cost $1.80 and lunch would be $2.75.

The reduced meal price of 30 cents for breakfast and 40 cents would not change.

It's the first time in six years the School Board has discussed increasing meal prices. The School District's last increase occurred in 2006 and prior to that, there had been no increase since 1988.

In addition to meal prices, the School Board will consider changing the opening and closing school times for the 2012/13 school year.

For students at nine Broward schools, one high school and eight elementary schools, this will mean an extended 30 minutes of class time added to their school day.

The additional 30 minutes would give extra teaching time for students in low-performing schools as required by a federal grant program called the School Improvement Grant.

The schools identified by the state in the 3-year-old SIG program are Coconut Creek High, Dillard Elementary, Imagine Charter Elementary @ North Lauderdale, Larkdale Elementary, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary, North Fork Elementary, North Lauderdale Elementary, Sunland Park Elementary and Walker Elementary.

Finally, the School Board will reveal its marks given to Superintendent Robert W. Runcie for his first annual evaluation.
