South Florida Crime

MIAMI (CBSMIami) – Miami Police have officially closed the door on any possible link between the Canadian killer Luka Rocco Magnotta and the 2009 murder and dismemberment of Omar Laparra in Miami.

The CBC first reported over the weekend that Miami Police were investigating the possibility Magnotta may have spent time in South Florida and what, if any, role he may have played in Laparra’s death.

Laparra was last seen leaving a local nightclub on May 31, 2009. In the following days, Laparra’s body parts were found floating in different parts of Miami-Dade County waterways.

Miami Poliec said the report was started when a reporter from Canada called Miami Police and wanted to know if the department had similar cases because the Canadian reporter had information Magnotta may have visited the area.

“Homicide detectives have contacted Canadian authorities and it does not appear at this time that their case is connected to the our case which occurred in June of 2009, and it is apparent at this time that this suspect was not in Miami during this murder,” said Detective William Moreno.

The CBC found several online postings that a person named Luka Magnotta was living in Miami in August 2010. The posts included pictures of a Lotus and the text had boasts that the poster, luka-magnotta, used the car to convince a female police officer to reduce a ticket and that he got frequent sexual attention due to the car.

Magnotta, a low-budget bisexual porn star, is imprisoned in Germany awaiting extradition to Montreal where he will face a multitude of charges including first-degree murder.

Montreal Police said Magnotta dismembered 33-year-old student Jun Lin and then mailed his parts to liberal and conservative leaders in the Canadian government.

The CBC reported police believe Magnotta may have posted the images and other online material to portray himself as a jet-setting, important person.
