MIAMI (CBSMiami) – It’s the last day of school and students are walking out ready to enjoy their summer vacation.

While the children are barely getting over the excitement of the end of classes, school officials are already thinking of next year and new changes that will be implemented.

“If fundraising had been done in the past on items that were not supposed to be sold like carbonated beverages or candy it just can’t occur on school campus or one hour after school lets out,” said Penny Parham with the Department of Food and Nutrition of MDCPS.

In the past this new rule was recommended, but now it will be enforced.

Under the Wellness Policy, bake sales will still be allowed but what is sold must comply with the guidelines.  For example, sugary snacks will be replaced by trail mix and original chips with baked ones.

CBS 4’s Marybel Rodriguez spoke with students and parents from Everglades K-8 who were torn on the policy.  While some said they can understand where they are coming from, others feel it will affect them financially.

“It would be difficult because a lot of our clubs like cheerleading and basketball use that method to get money,” said Zoey Penalver.

Another change that will be seen, there will no longer be unhealthy snacks or drinks in the teachers vending machines.

“Those vending machines will also follow the guidelines” said Parham.
