Mother Charged With Beating Boy With Belt

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A Hallandale Beach mother was arrested after she reportedly beat her son with a belt as a punishment for spiking the neighbor's cat food.

A Broward Sheriff's deputy was sent to an apartment building at 417 NW 6th Street after someone called to report a case of child abuse.

The deputy found a boy with fresh welts and cuts across both his arms and on his face. When asked how he got the marks, the boy told the deputy that his mother, 27-year old Deeandra Mitchell, had hit him repeatedly with a large leather belt.

When asked why she would do such a thing, the boy said because he had WD-40 in the dish of the neighbor's cat food. When the deputy found Mitchell she reportedly said "I beat him cus he sprayed WD-40 in the neighbor's cat food," according to the arrest report.

Mitchell was charged with one count of aggravated child abuse. Bond is set at $10,000.
