South Miami Man Surrenders After Police Stand Off

SOUTH MIAMI (CBSMiami) – South Miami Middle Community School was temporarily placed on a precautionary lockdown on Wednesday when SWAT team members surrounded a 'grow house' with a man barricaded inside.

The school, at 6750 Southwest 60th Street, was supposed to recess for the day at 1:35 p.m. Instead, the students were held until around 3 p.m. when police determined the situation at a home virtually across the street was safe.

When police moved in on the home in the 6600 block of SW 61st Street to check out reports that marijuana was being grown inside, a man who was in the residence barricaded himself inside.

When they were unable to determine if he was armed or if there were more than one individual inside, special response team members surrounded the home.

Around 2:40 p.m., a man who looked to be in his 40s or 50s walked out of the front of the home, his arms raised in the air to surrender. He was handcuffed and taken into custody.
