2 Bodies Found In Car Submerged In Canal

PLANTATION (CBSMiami) - Family and friends are mourning the deaths of two Davie residents -- killed when the car they were driving in went into a Plantation canal sometime late Thursday night or early Friday morning.

Plantation Police confirmed the deceased as 43 year old Amber Filion and 51 year old Joseph Stephenson.

Investigators say a police helicopter saw the white Nissan resting on the bottom of a canal around 2 pm Friday.

A short time after investigators pulled the car from the water they saw the bodies of a man and woman inside. Police say Filion and Stephenson worked together and were heading home from a restaurant.

They were reported missing from Davie late Thursday.

Investigators say it's not clear who was driving. But detectives believe whoever was behind the wheel tried to make a u-turn at the end of Old Hiatus Road near Tara Drive.

"It appears that this vehicle may have been lost and while conducting a u-turn may have rolled into the canal," said Police Detective Robert Rettig.

Police say Filion sent a text message around 10:30 Thursday night and that's the last anyone heard from her.

Several of her friends showed up at the accident site Friday but were too distraught to speak to reporters.

One of them told CBS 4 News that Amber does have children.

Chuck Clarke lives in this neighborhood. He said at night if you don't know there's a canal along this stretch of Old Hiatus Road, you might not see it.

"There's no barricades, no markers showing that there's a canal at the end of the road," Clarke said. "I think there needs to be. It's a shame what happened."
