Teen Seriously Burned In Opa-Locka Kitchen Fire

OPA-LOCKA (CBSMiami) -- Take Your Child to Work Day turned out to be dangerous for an Opa-Locka teenager who stayed home from school and was seriously burned while in the kitchen.

A law enforcement source told CBS4's Peter D'Oench that 16-year-old Jovanny Iainez was allowed to stay home from school by his mother because it was "Take Your Child To Work Day."

While home, he decided to cook some French fries in the kitchen of his home at 1201 Rutland Street. He was boiling oil in a kettle on the stove when it caught fire, according to the source.

Iainez suffered extensive burns all over his body and was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital.

"He is a good kid. I thought he would be okay staying home from school," said his mother Blanca Iainez. "He was just making French fries. I hope he will be okay. I am trying to find out more information about my son. I am really upset."

His condition is not known.
