Thousands Of Students Attend CBS4 Weather Day

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Nearly 13,000 students from the Tri-county area attended the 6th annual CBS4 Weather Day Monday at prior to the Miami Marlins vs. Arizona Diamondbacks game at Marlins Park.

Elementary and middle school students from Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties were on hand as part of the fun-filled, science-focused educational field trip.

CBS4 Chief Meteorologist David Bernard, along with Meteorologists Craig Setzer and Lissette Gonzalez hosted the event from the field, which stayed nice and dry during the rainy conditions outside thanks to the Marlins Park retractable roof.

The pre-game program is designed to teach kids some basic concepts of weather and climate and how these topics relate to living in South Florida.

The students learned about thunderstorms, lightning, tornadoes and hurricanes, as well as how the weather affects South Florida's eco-system.

Officials from the Museum of Discovery and Science in Fort Lauderdale also brought along a few slithery friends and talked about animals that live in the Everglades.

They showed off "Amber" the gopher tortoise, a king snake, "Wally" the alligator and "Thumbalina" an 8-foot Burmese Python.

The event has been officially approved by all three school districts and complies with Florida's Science standards.

Weather Day is a collaborative effort of CBS4, the Miami Marlins, the National Weather Service, the Museum of Discovery and Science and Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties public schools.

The students who attend CBS4 Weather Day are invited to stay for the Marlins v. Diamondbacks game where CBS4's David Bernard will throw out of the first pitch.
