Threat Against Sen. Rubio Investigated

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Freshman U.S. Senator Marco Rubio is now under the watchful eye of law enforcement after he reportedly became the target of a threat.

While Rubio's office would not detail the nature of the threat,  investigators said it was credible enough to merit police protection in Washington D.C. and at his home in West Miami.

"The Capitol Police, I'm sure, vetted this threat that came in and have determined that there is some credibility to it and that's why they contacted us for assistance," said West Miami Police Chief Nelson Andreu.

In addition to stationing officers at Rubio's home, Andreu said his department was "doing some other things" as well but declined to elaborate.

West Miami City Manager, Yolanda Aguilar, said the city was acting appropriately to protect a "very prominent citizen."

There has been a lot of speculation in the media as to whether Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney would ask Rubio to be his vice presidential running mate. If he does ask, another question would be whether Rubio would accept the offer. In the past, Rubio has flatly denied that he would be interested, but more recently he has refuse to discuss the issue.

As to Rubio ending up on the Republican presidential ticket in November, Aguilar said, "I believe that the sky is the limit for the United States Senator. I think he is an excellent candidate for vice-president."

If Rubio is tapped by Romney and he accepts, he would receive around-the-clock protection from the U.S. Secret Service.
