PETA Punks Marlins With Anti-Fishing Brick At "The Fish Tank"

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – It seems the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals have punked the Miami Marlins.

PETA, which objected to the installation of two enormous aquariums that serve as a home-plate backstop at the new Marlins Park (a/k/a The Fish Tank), purchased one of the commemorative bricks on display in the East Plaza.

The brick reads: "Florida Is Still Hosting Incredible Night Games. Help Us Reach The Stars. Cheer Our Marlins!"

There's nothing wrong with that message but PETA has a hidden message in the engraved stone.

The first letter of each word spells out "FishingHurts.com."

It's a page on PETA's website about what it claims to be cruelty involved in fishing.

"PETA's brick is designed to remind everyone that fish feel pain and suffer when they're impaled with a sharp metal hook and pulled into an environment in which they can't breathe," said PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman in an e-mailed statement. "Instead of hooking fish, PETA wants Marlins fans to get hooked on compassion—and bench fishing permanently."

According to PETA, Marlins are a species of fish which are intelligent, sensitive animals who feel pain. Fish which are caught and released often die from their injuries.
