Suspect In Vicious Kendall Publix Attack Arrested

KENDALL(CBSMiami) – A man accused of attacking a Publix manager in Kendall after he was allegedly caught shoplifting has been taken into custody.

William Mangold, 47, has been charged with strong armed robbery.

The attack, which happened in the lobby of the store at 11750 SW 104th Street on Feb. 27th, was caught on a security camera. Miami-Dade police said someone recognized Mangold from a flyer with a picture of the attack on it and told the manager. The manager, who did not wish to be identified in this report, called police. On Thursday, police tracked Mangold to his residence and took him into custody.

Publix shoppers and a veteran Miami-Dade police detective said the images from the attack were very disturbing.

"He's obviously shown that he can be violent and these are the individuals we do not need lingering in our community," said police spokesman Det. Alvaro Zabaleta after the attack. He added that the man went out of his way to hurt the store manager.

According to police, surveillance cameras captured Mangold walking through the store putting items in his back pack. When one of the store's managers confronted him near the front doors, he attacked.

The security tape shows the manager get thrown to the ground and then pummeled with fists.

After the attack the man left the store and took off on a black bicycle. Bruised and battered the manager returned to work the following day.
