Deadly Diving Accident Off Pompano Beach

POMPANO BEACH (CBSMiami) – A diving accident has claimed the life of a Canadian diver off the coast of Pompano Beach.

According to Pompano Beach Fire Rescue spokesperson Sandra King, fire rescue crews along with Broward Sheriff's deputies were called to Fish City Marina at 2601 North Ocean Boulevard after a diver was pulled from the water.

The diver, Bruce Magill, 63, of Ontario, Canada,  was part of a group on a glass-bottom catamaran called the "Aqua View" which takes people on snorkeling and diving tours.

BSO dispatch received the call around 11:00 a.m. after a tourist on a dive expedition did not resurface.

"One gentleman got separated from the group," said Dr. Jayen Patel.

Patel, who is vacationing in sunny South Florida, was onboard the boat. He said when everyone realized someone was missing, they began a search.

Once they found, Dr. Patel sprang into action.

"We eventually found him floating beneath the waves, then we got him back on the boat and tried to resuscitate him," Dr. Patel said.

Despite their best efforts the Magill died.

BSO Crime Scene and Homicide detectives are investigating. The medical examiner is performing an autopsy to figure out if the Magill had a medical problem or if the death was caused by trouble in the water.
