Bomb Squad Checks Out "Suspicious" Backpack On Las Olas Blvd.

FT. LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) – Ft. Lauderdale police used a special robot to check out a suspicious package found on East Las Olas Boulevard.

Chopper4 over the scene spotted the robot slowly examining a red and black backpack which was chained to bars over a window of a building.

The sign on the front of the building stated that it housed Wells Fargo Advisors and the office of Steven L Rowe, Certified Financial Planner.  The road was closed to traffic in both directions.

Just before 11 a.m., the robot's operator used a specially designed clawing to slowly open and remove items from the pack. The first item removed was a long white object, possible a pair of white pants or a towel. It next removed two more white items which appeared to be about the size of a Styrofoam cup.

A member of the bomb squad was then suited up to investigate the backpack and its contents in person.  Cautiously approaching it, the officer first checked to see how it was attached to the bars and then started removing more items from it which looked like articles of clothing.

Police have not said exactly what they found in the pack, but it didn't appear to be dangerous.
